Samhain: The History and Traditions of the Celtic New Year

The ancient Celts observed the Gaelic feast of Samhain. It signalled the conclusion of the harvest season and the start of the winter season. The Celts thought that on this day, the gulf between the living and the dead was most permeable, allowing the souls of the dead to visit the living.

Together with Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Imbolc, Samhain was one of the four major holidays celebrated according to the Gaelic calendar. Being the start of a new year, it was a moment of immense significance to the Celts. Samhain was connected to many different traditions. Lighting bonfires were one of the most significant.

Although Samhain is being celebrated today, it’s very different from how the ancient Celts did. Samhain is the ancestor of Halloween, which is observed on October 31st. Several of the customs associated with Samhain including dressing up in costumes and carving pumpkins are still followed today. Let’s examine a few of these customs.

1. Lighting bonfires

In villages as well as on hilltops, bonfires were lit. In addition to being used for divination, they were thought to have purifying and preserving properties. The bonfires were also seen as a means of warding off the ghosts of the dead because the Celts thought that on Samhain, ghosts would enter the world of the living. Sometimes, Samhain emblems like skulls, pumpkins, and crows were used to adorn the bonfires.

2. Wearing masks and costumes

The Celts thought that on Samhain, the boundary separating the worlds of the living and the dead was the thinnest. As a result, ghosts of the deceased might enter the world of the living. They intended to hide themselves from the spirits and prevent harm by donning masks and costumes. People would frequently dress up as animals, fantastical creatures, or other Samhain symbols.

3. Making offerings to the dead

For the ghosts of their ancestors, people would leave food and drink out. This was done with the intention of placating them and winning their goodwill. These offerings frequently consisted of foods, beverages, and other things that the departed had liked in life. The sacrifices were made at intersections, cemeteries, or other locations regarded as holy to the deceased.

It was common for people to slaughter livestock during samhain. The livestock were offered as sacrifice to the dead. On the other hand, the bones of the slaughtered animals were then thrown into the bonfire.

4. Telling stories and legends

Samhain was a time for storytelling and legend-telling. Around the fire, people would congregate to share tales. Themes of death, the afterlife, and the supernatural were frequently present in the tales and legends that were told around Halloween. The tale of the wild hunt, the banshee tale, and the pca tale are some of the most well-known tales and legends related to Halloween.

5. Divination

Divination is the practice of using supernatural methods to learn about the unknown or the future. There are numerous ways to do divination, and people have done it for millennia. A period for divination was Samhain. Humans used to look for omens in the bonfires’ flames. Another popular method of doing divination was through the use of tarot cards, runes, and palm reading.

6. Cleaning the house

Before Samhain, the Celts considered it crucial to clean the house. Any unluck from the previous year was to be swept away with this. Cleaning your home during Samhain can be done in a variety of ways. You can either focus on cleaning particular rooms in your house that are connected to death or the hereafter, or you can perform a conventional deep clean.

7. Eating and drinking

It was customary to eat well and have fun during Samhain. Traditional foods including bread, apples, and nuts would be consumed. Ale and other alcoholic drinks were also consumed by them. As a representation of life and sustenance, bread is frequently consumed during Samhain. Cakes are frequently adorned with Samhain-related decorations like pumpkins, skulls, and bats.

8. Dancing and singing

Samhain was a time for celebration. Around the bonfires, people would sing, dance, play games, and crack jokes. The old traditions of Samhain can be reconnected through traditional folk dances, which are frequently performed in a circle.
