Sukumari was a Kerala-born Indian actress who worked predominantly in Tamil and Malayalam films. She has been an actress for more than 60 years and has played a variety of roles. It was estimated that she had made around 2000 films in total. She was one of the most in-demand actors.

1. She is related to the Travancore Royal Family
Madhavan Nair, a bank manager, and Sathyabhama Amma of Tharishuthala Valia Veedu in Kalkulam, two Malayali parents, gave birth to Sukumari on October 6, 1940, in Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu (in present-day Kanyakumari District).
Sathyabhama Amma was the niece of a celebrated beauty who chose to wed the wealthy landowner Kesava Pillai of Kandamath rather than the king. The Travancore Royal Family is related to her through her cousin Ambika.
2. She went to Poojappura LP School to study
She attended Poojappura LP School up until the second grade before moving to Madras to finish her education.
3. Sukumari was noticed by a director
A director took note of Sukumari when she visited the set of a movie with Padmini, and she went on to make her acting debut in the lead role of the Tamil movie Or Iravu. She performed in a number of black-and-white Malayalam and Tamil films, including Udhyogastha by P. Venu, Chettathi, Kusruthikkuttan, Kunjali Marakkar, Thacholi Othenan, Yakshi, and Karinizhal.
She then rose to fame after appearing in several Priyadarshan movies, including Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, Oodarathuammava Aalariyam, Boeing Boeing, and Vandanam. She also made several films under the direction of Balachandra Menon, including Manicheppu Thurannappol and Karyam Nissaram. She later appeared prominently in the Adoor Gopalakrishnan-directed film Nizhalkuthu (2002). She portrayed a number of noteworthy mothers.

At age 10, she started performing. She received Padma Shri from the Indian government in 2003 for her support of the arts.
She was recognised for her work in the Tamil movie Namma Gramam with the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress (2010). Sukumari passed away on March 26, 2013, in Chennai, from a heart attack.
6. Sukumari died from a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Chennai
She was 38 when he passed away in 1978. Suresh, the son of the couple, is a trained doctor and has appeared in movies like Yuvajanotsavam, and Cheppu.
Suresh wed costume designer Uma. Vignesh is the name of Suresh and Uma’s son. She is related to the Malayalam actresses Ambika Sukumaran, Vineeth, Shobana, and Indian actor Krishna Krishna.
7. Following her death, several South Indian personalities offered their condolences
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Jayalalithaa, who had acted alongside Sukumari, stated in a sympathy message that Sukumari had made a special mark on South Indian theatre and film.
Sukumari was referred to as a “phenomenon in Malayalam cinema” by Kerala’s Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy. Malayalam performers, according to actor and minister for cinema K.B. Ganesh Kumar, have lost “the caring presence of a mother on the sets.” Sukumari’s passing was referred to as a “major loss for Indian film” by opposition leader V. S. Achuthanandan.
