Top 10 Remarkable Facts about Bipin Chandra Pal

Bipin Chandra Pal was born on November 7,  1858 in the village of Poil, Habigani, Sylhet District, Bengal Presidency of British India, in a Hindu Bengali Kayastha family.

His father was Ramchandra Pal, a Persian scholar, and small landowner. He studied and taught at the Church Mission Society College currently, St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College. The institution is an affiliated college of the University of Calcutta.

His son was Niranjan Pal, one of the founders of Bombay Talkies. One son-in-law was the ICS officer, S.K. Dey, who later became a union minister.

His other son-in-law was freedom fighter Ullaskar Dutta who married Lila Dutta his childhood love interest after many circumstances at their last age.

Moreover, he was a nationalist, writer, orator, social reformer and Indian Independence Movement Freedom Fighter. 

Among his many friends, notably, he was among the Lal Bal Pal triumvirate. He became one of the planners of the Swadeshi movement along with Sri Aurobindo. Further, he opposed the partition of Bengal by the British colonial government.

He was a journalist by profession and served as the founder-editor of Paridarshak. He gave lectures and wrote in various publications in English and Bengali to raise awareness about the nationalist movement.

The ‘Bengal Tiger’ was considered as one of the most independent and outspoken thinkers. He was one of the strongest critics of Mahatma Gandhi’s pacifist ways and openly disagreed with the non-cooperation movement believing that it didn’t address the question of self-government.

In his presidential speech, he expressed that Gandhi’s ideas were based on ‘magic’ rather than ‘logic’.

Pal married a widow and joined the Brahmo Samaj following the death of his wife.

He was an outspoken opponent of the caste system and a supporter of gender equality.

The history of India cannot be written without a mention of Pal due to the contribution he made in fight for freedom. Actually, he was known as the father of revolutionary.

Although the revolutionary leader left politics in 1920, he continued to share his opinions on national issues until his death.

Known as the Father of Revolutionary in India and known to be a major leader of the Indian National Congress he he held a position at the Madras session in 1887. At that time, he made a strong plea for repeal of the Arms Act which was  discriminatory in nature.

Along with Lala Lajpat Rai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Pal belonged to the trio that was associated with revolutionary activities in India.

The three were famous in India and known as the Father of Revolutionary Thoughts. They were part of the known freedom fighters.  Actually, they were known as the British Columbia Pal.
 
3. Chief Advocate of a New National Movement

Together with Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, they were the chief supporters of a new national movement revolving around the ideals of Purna Swaraj, Swadeshi’s bycott and national education.

He was a great Supporter of Boycott for foreign goods in an effort to eradicate poverty and unemployment. He wanted to remove social evils from the form and arouse the feelings of nationalism through national criticism.

He had no faith in mild protests in the form of non-cooperation with the British colonial government. On that one issue, the assertive nationalist leader had nothing in common with Mahatma Gandhi.

During the last six years of his life, he parted company with the Congress and led a secluded life. Sri Aurobindo referred to him as one of the mightiest prophet of nationalism.

Bipin Chandra Pal made his efforts to remove social and economic ills. He opposed caste system and advocated widow remarriage. He advocated 48 hours of work week and demanded a hike in wages of workers.

He expressed his disdain for Gandhi’s ways, which he criticized for being rooted in “magic” instead of “logic”.

6. Pal was a Journalist

He was a journalist by profession and served as the founder-editor of Paridarshak. He gave lectures and wrote in various publications in English and Bengali to raise awareness about the nationalist movement.

As a journalist, Pal worked for Bengal Public Opinion. The Tribune and New India is where he propagated his brand of nationalism. He wrote several articles warning India of the changes happening including other geopolitical situations.

In one of his writings, he described where the future danger for India was to happen. The writing was entitled Our Real Danger.

7. Leader of Anti-British Government

However, Pal was very instrumental when the British Government announced their plan of partition of Bengal in December 1903.
 
He singled handedly constructed the revolutionary political philosophy of Young Bengal and succeeded in annexing Madras or rather the South India to that revolutionary creed.

Pal was commonly known as Bengal tiger by majority of the locals when he joined the Indian National Congress in 1886.
