10 Must Watch Bollywood Comedy Movies   

Movies teach us about the societies we live in, the culture, food, relationships, and many more things in a fine, ironic or direct manner. Comedies, context notwithstanding, teach you all the above while making you laugh.  

With laughter being the best medicine, both psychologically and biologically, we all need a good laugh to reduce stress and boost our immune systems.

1. Hera Pheri  

We start the list with Hera Pheri, a 2000 Indian Hindi-language award-winning comedy film that is regarded as one of the best Hindi comedy films ever made. The film has a sequel, Phir Hera Pheri, that was released in 2006 making this movie the first installment of the Hera Pheri franchise.  

It was voted the best Bollywood comedy film of all time in an online poll conducted by The Indian Express. The storyline of this classic revolves around three unemployed men looking for answers to their financial problems but in a fun way. The two tenants and a landlord, in desperate need of money, chance upon a ransom call via a cross connection. They hatch a plan to claim the ransom for themselves. It is a funny movie worth your time. 

2. Delhi Belly

Next is Delhi Belly. This one is a 2011 Indian action-comedy film that is a must-see for laughs. It is rated 16 years and above and was declared a super hit in its third week having grossed close to 7 million US Dollars. The film had initially been censored due to heavy language, sexual content, and drug use. 

The story is about three struggling roommates, Tashi, Nitin, and Arup, who unknowingly become the potential prey of a ruthless gangster who together with his gang seriously threatens any plans Tashi and his friends may have for the future.  

3. 3 Idiots 

3 Idiots is a 2009 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani. The movie received widespread praise because of its direction, themes, story, screenplay, soundtrack, and performances of the cast. 

The movie is based on the life of Racho, an engineering student, and his two friends Farhan and Raju. It builds upon the academic pressure from their families for the trio to succeed. When Racho moves away for a while, his two friends go searching for him.  

They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them “idiots”.  This movie is rated PG 13 and it will make you laugh. Little bursts of comic scenes are beautifully woven into the narrative by the filmmaker. 

4. Housefull 

Housefull is a 2010 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. The movie became the first installment of the Housefull franchise. 

The movie is a romantic comedy that narrates the story of Aarush, the world’s unluckiest man who believes he is jinxed. He has faith that his bad luck can vanish if he finds true love. In a bid to find love, he goes along with a lie that leads to many more. 

Different people from different walks of life come together, adding even more confusion to this hilarious comedy of errors resulting in the chaos and mayhem that form the heart of the story. Watch this movie and have a good laugh at Aarush’s pain. 

5. Karwaan

Karwaan, which translates to ‘caravan’, is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language Road comedy-drama film. It is a bittersweet, tender, and hilarious road trip film about life and death and fathers and their children. 

The film features three empathetic central performances. A corporate employee, Avinash, who always wanted to be a photographer, is forced to go on a road trip when his father passes away in an accident and he gets the wrong body by mistake.

His companions are his friend Shaukat, whose van they take, and Tanya, the granddaughter of the woman whose body they mistakenly took. The unlikely team goes through several weird situations to reach their destination. It is a funny movie worth watching. 

6. Fukrey 

Fukrey is a 2013 Indian Hindi-language comedy film that was produced under the Excel Entertainment banner. The film went on to become a sleeper hit grossing around 1.7 million dollars within the first five days of its release.  

The story is about four friends who want to make easy money but eventually find out that there are no shortcuts in life. These four, Hunny, Choocha, Lali, and Zafar, get bombarded with unprecedented characters and an unfortunate turn of events.  

The movie is a refreshing reflection of the urban middle-class youth with serious laughter moments and a great performance by the entire cast.  

7. Munna Bhai M.B.B.S  

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S is a 2003 award-winning Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film that is a must-watch for a dose of laughter.  

In India, gangsters are called Bhai (brothers). One such Bhai is Munna, who is feared by everyone in Mumbai. He cons his village-based parents into believing that he is a doctor and gets shocked when he finds out that they are coming to verify for themselves. Munna’s plan to fool them blows up in his face and he decides to enroll in a medical college to fulfill his parents’ desire. Does he graduate from med school? Watch this hilarious movie to find out.

8. Vicky Donor

Vicky Donor is a 2012 award-winning Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy film. It did extremely well at the box office and it achieved commercial success from the beginning. 

The storyline is about a happy-go-lucky but unemployed Vicky who is a vagabond. He is urged by a fertility doctor to make better use of his ‘wasted’ sperm. He becomes a sperm donor and turns this into a ‘productive’ idea until it becomes the origin of his troubles. How will his girlfriend and mother react to this? Will his life come crashing down because of his past as a donor? 

This film is a light-hearted take on sperm donation and is a hilarious one. 

9. Bhagam Bhag  

Bhagam Bhag is a 2006 Indian Hindi-language comedy thriller film that was a success from the beginning. The film is a fun-filled one with lots of Twists and Turns and could easily have you laughing from the beginning to the end. 

Members of a drama troupe get in trouble when they are framed for a murder. A series of events put the trio in a non-stop chaotic situation involving drug dealers, goons who want revenge, as well as a local Police Commissioner, who also has a role to play in a comedy of errors and terrors. Things become worse when one of their actresses commits suicide. 

The movie is very hilarious and will leave you laughing your heart out. 

10. OMG – Oh My God

OMG is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language satirical comedy-drama film with a unique storyline. The movie is based on a shopkeeper, Kanji, who takes God to court when his shop is ruined by an earthquake. Kanji complains to God because his insurance declines to pay him saying the loss was due to an act of God.  

He first goes through a lot of resistance, but eventually, people turn out in his favor. People from other religions also join him and so notice is sent to every religious leader. Does Kanji win against God? Watch this funny comedy for a dose of laughter.
