The sport of gymnastics began in the late 1700s. Europe was the originator of the sport that quickly found its way into other countries such as the US by the 1800s.

Gymnastics was first included in the Olympic Games in 1896 and only men were allowed to compete. However, things took a turn in 1928 when the Summer Olympics hosted the first-ever gymnastic competition that was inclusive of women.

Europe is home to notable gymnasts from both male and female categories. The following is a list of the most recognised British gymnasts of all time.

1. Jessica Gadirova- Female

Jessica Gadirova is an artistic gymnast from Dublin, Ireland. She has several accolades to her name and was crowned the European Floor Exercise Champion two times in a row (2021 and 2022).

Jessica began training in gymnastics at 6 years old and first competed in the British Espoir Championships when she was 12 years. Her stellar performance in the 2019 Sainte Gym Cup aided Great Britain to win the coveted gold medal right behind France.

Jessica is said to represent Great Britain and compete alongside her sister, Jennifer Gadirova, in the 2022 World Championships.

2. Max Whitlock- Male

Max Anthon Whitlock is an artistic gymnast. He is the most successful gymnast in the category of pommel horse and in the history of Great Britain.

Max is a six-time Olympic medalist holder and holds the record for the first ever Olympic gold medalist to win both the men’s floor and pommel horse exercises. He was appointed MBE, Member of The Order of the British Empire, in 2017 and an Officer of the Order of The British Empire in 2022 (OBE) for his excellent performance in the world of gymnastics.

3. Claudia Fragapane- Female

Claudia Fragapane is an artistic gymnast, born in 1997, who became famous after winning four gold medals in a single game at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. She was the first English woman to attain such since Joyce Cooper in 1930.

Claudia began training as a gymnast when she was 6 and had her first international competition at 17 years. She part of the women’s team that won Great Britain first ever bronze team medal in the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Claudia represented England in the recently concluded 2022 Commonwealth Games winning gold in the women’s all-around team.

4. Eleftherios Petrounias -Male

Eleftherios Petrounias is a three-time world champion artistic gymnast from Greece (born in 1990). He was named Greece’s male athlete of the year for four consecutive years (2015-2018).

Petrounias was introduced to gymnastics at the age of five as a way of releasing his hyperactivity. He continued to take part in the sport but took a 3-year break at the age of 14 due to emotional and physical exhaustion.

He participated in his first international competition in 2011 where he won a bronze medal. Petrounias won the world championship gold medal on the rings from 2016 to 2018. He also won 6 gold medals in the European Champions and 1 gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games.

5. Gabrielle Logan – Female

Gabrielle Logon is a BBC television presenter and a former gymnast from England (born in 1973). She was born into an athletic family, her father being an international footballer who played for the Leeds United Football Club.

Logan first participated in rhythmic gymnastics in 1990 at the Commonwealth Games in New Zealand. She retired from the sport and in 1991 decided to pursue her career as a TV presenter. She was amongst the first female sports anchors in the 1990s to break into terrestrial television.

6. Damien Walters – Male

Damien Walters is a former gymnast from Derbyshire, England (born in 1982). He is also a stuntman and is well known for his excellent execution of skills in power tumbling and the trampoline. He ranked 5th in the 2003 and 2005 Trampoline World Championships.

Damien retired from competing as a gymnast in 2007 and is currently continuing his profession as a stuntman and free runner. He is a major influencer on the social media platform YouTube, having gathered a total of over 100 million views in his freerunning videos.

7. Amy Tinkler – Female

Amy Tinkler is a former gymnast and award-winning Olympian from Durham, England (born in 1999). She was in the Great Britain Women National Artistic Gymnastics Team from 2012 to 2020. Amy won the British all-around championship in 2015 and was third place in the 2016 Olympic Floor Exercise.

After tearing her ankle ligaments during practice, Amy was unable to participate further as a gymnast and retired at the young age of 21. In 2021, she participated in Dancing on Ice but was eliminated in the fifth week of the competition.

8. Nile Wilson- Male

Nile Wilson is a former artistic gymnast and Olympic bronze medalist from Leeds, England (born in 1996). In 2015, he was part of the men’s team that won the first world team silver medal in British gymnastic history.

Wilson has several awards to his name. He was the first Briton to win the European horizontal bar champion and is a five-time Commonwealth Games champion. At the age of 25, he retired from gymnastics due to injuries and is currently a social media influencer.

9. Elizabeth Tweddle – Female

Elizabeth Tweddle is a retired artistic gymnast from Johannesburg, South Africa 9born 1985). She became a citizen of England when her family moved to Cheshire 18 months after her birth. Tweddle engaged herself in different types of sports before finding an interest in gymnastics.

Tweddle is known for her consistency as an elite gymnast. One of the skills in the Uneven Bars category in the Code of Points is named after her. She was one of five Olympians that were chosen as part of a 2012 body casting project by the British body sculptor, Louise Giblin. The gold-colored cast was presented to her at the Museum of Liverpool.

10. Louis Smith – Male

Louis Smith MBE (Member of The Order of the British Empire) is a former artistic gymnast from Peterborough, England (born in 1989). He won his first international title in the 2015 European Championships when he represented Great Britain in the pommel horse category.

Smith won several awards and was appointed an MBE in 2013 for his participation in gymnastics. After retiring from gymnastics in 2018, Smith continued to nurture his other talents by participating in tv series and shows such as Strictly Come Dancing.
