How to spend One Day in Frankfurt

The busiest airport in Germany is in Frankfurt, one of the top five largest cities in the country. Not everyone understands that stopping in the city is worthwhile because it serves as a key airport hub for travellers coming into Germany and most of Europe. We’ve selected the top attractions for your ideal day in Frankfurt since it’s worth spending one or two days exploring Frankfurt!

Skyscraper-dotted Frankfurt, which is also the location of the European Central Bank, is better renowned as a financial centre than as a tourist destination. The city offers a lovely old town, an excellent city tour, fantastic museums, delectable restaurants, and a number of unusual attractions. The information you need to plan a fantastic day in Frankfurt, Germany, whether you have a long stopover or a few days, is provided here.

Where is Frankfurt?

The German state of Hesse is where Frankfurt is situated. Frankfurt is situated southeast of the Taunus mountain range, on both sides of the Main River. Frankfurt City Forest, the largest urban forest in Germany, is located in the southern section of the city. Munich and Berlin are both reachable by vehicle from Frankfurt in around 4 and 5.5 hours, respectively.

Before you leave

By plane and train, Frankfurt is a pretty simple city to reach. Planning a trip here is not difficult at all, no matter where in the world you are. Pick up Rick Steve’s Guide to Germany before you depart if you enjoy reading guides.

Arriving at the Airport? Here’s How to Get Downtown

Train travel between the airport and the city centre is recommended. Follow the ‘Regional Trains’ signage on tracks 1-3 after leaving the airport. Take the S8 or S9 train (direction of Hanau Hbf). Only ten minutes separate the airport’s main station (Hauptbahnhof) from the city centre via rail.

Getting Around Frankfurt City

The city is also quite simple to get around on foot or by bus. Additionally, there are bike rentals available almost everywhere, but especially close to Frankfurt’s major train station.

10 things you can do in Frankfurt Germany:

1. Hop On – Hop Off Bus

The hop-on-hop-off bus tour is one of my favourite things to do while visiting a new city. The panorama of the city is excellent. The hop-on-hop-off bus makes 15 stops at the most significant landmarks in Frankfurt, such as the major train station, the so-called “new old town,” various museums, the main tower, and the university district.

2. Public Guided City Walk

The Romer, Emperoror’s Cathedral, St. Paul’s Church, and Museum Embankment along the Main River are all included in this 1.5-hour walking tour that concentrates on Frankfurt’s urban history and old town region. On most Saturdays, tours start at 2:30 but check the schedule before you go because it could alter depending on the season.

3. Visit the Römerberg Area

This ancient plaza, which is located in the centre of the old town, had to be fully rebuilt following World War II’s bombardment. The Fountain of Justice (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen), a historic well constructed in 1612, is almost as recognizable as the gabled homes that surround the Römerberg.

4. Visit Lovelock Bridge (Iron Footbridge)

The Eiserner Steg, also known as the Iron Footbridge, spans the Main River and links Frankfurt’s north and south coasts. It is made of steel and has a steel frame. Additionally, it is the quickest way to get from Römer to the Sachsenhausen neighbourhood, home of the renowned Apfelwein.

This 1869-built iron bridge in neo-Gothic design has been repaired numerous times, most recently in 1993. Visitors come and hang their wishes on the iron locks-covered guardrail of the bridge. One of the most well-liked tourist attractions in Frankfurt is this!

5. Enjoy Lunch Along the River

One of the nicest areas to visit from late spring to early fall is along the banks of the Main River. Go for a walk, ride a bike, have a picnic, or just relax with a drink or meal at one of the many eateries along the banks.

6. Visit a Museum or Two

Frankfurt has more than 20 museums to select from, making it one of Germany’s top museum destinations. The Natural History Museum (Senckenberg Museum), one of the biggest natural history museums in Europe, was one of our favourites when I was there.

It is close to the campus of university and serves as a bus station for the hop-on, hop-off tour. (The Senckenberg Museum has the largest collection of Mesozoic dinosaurs in Germany as well as a varied fossil show. This is a museum that you should not miss if science and nature fascinate you.

7. Goethe House

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and his home was constructed in the traditional bourgeoisie style of the 18th century. The Museum is a collection of paintings that showcase Goethe’s affinity for the works and creators of his day. For any reader visiting Frankfurt, this is a must-see location.

8. Explore Street Art Near University Area

Exploring Frankfurt’s street art and graffiti is very worthwhile. Even though I was only in the city for two days, my exploration of the area turned up several stunning items.

You will see the fantastic Frankfurt Streetart Map, which allows you to look for various kinds of art as well as search by neighbourhood. When you go, do yourself a favour and set aside some time to hunt down some of these treasures.

9. Explore Ostzeile

This building complex sometimes referred to as the Ostzeile, is conveniently located on the east side of the plaza, across from the Römer. Six charming half-timbered homes are lined up in a row; they are replicas of the homes’ original faces from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The whole Old Town and the Ostzeile were destroyed in the 1944 bombardments. The dwellings weren’t rebuilt in the neighbourhood until 1981 when the historical construction form was followed.

Each of the six residences, which are numbered from left to right, has a unique name: Zum Engel, Kleiner Laubenberg (Little Laubenberg), Großer Laubenberg (Large Laubenberg), Wilder Mann (Wild Man), and Kleiner Dachsberg-Schlüssel (Little Dachsberg) (At the Angel).

10. Try Apple Wine (Apfelwein or Ebbelwoi)

Germany is well-known for its beers and beer gardens, but Frankfurt is also famous for its apple wine. You can discover apple wine bars in the old city where the apple wine is prepared by hand and served from the customary “bembel,” which is a blue and white stoneware jug.

The wine is poured into a “gerippte,” a traditional glass with a diamond pattern. The German name for apple wine, Ebbelwoi or Apfelwein, is served chilled. The German word for apple wine is “Schoppen”. Some people prefer to combine it with some sparkling water because it can be a little sour. In either case, it’s one of the best things to do in Frankfurt and is cool and quite refreshing.

Even the Apple Wine Express is accessible! This one-hour tour is conducted aboard a streetcar from the 1950s and includes apple wine, pretzels, and live music.

As a result, it is a metropolis chock full of gourmet, retail, and cultural delights. The readers of this post are those who plan to visit the city only briefly, although there are a lot more activities to look forward to while there, we hope that you get to do half the things on this list.
