Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was born on 23 December 1967 in Turin, Italy. She is legally the daughter of Italian concert pianist Marisa Borini and industrialist and classical composer Alberto Bruni Tedeschi. She is a singer and fashion model.

Her sister is actress and movie director Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, and She had a brother Virginio Bruni Tedeschi who died from complications of HIV/AIDS.

She was one of the world’s most successful models in the 1990s, and she is married to the former  President of France Nikolas Sarkozy.

1. Her Family Migrated to France when she was a Child

Carla Bruni’s family moved to France when she was a child to escape a wave of kidnappings and killings of right-wing politicians and business people by the left-wing Red Brigades.

The Red Brigades were a Communist terrorist group active in Italy in the 1970s and 1980s. Bruni grew up in France from the age of seven and attended the boarding school Chateau Mont-Choisi in Lausanne, Switzerland.

She went to Paris to study art and architecture but left school at 19 to become a model. Bruni also has a half-sister, Consuelo Remmert.

2. Carla Bruni dated French Publisher Jean-Paul Enthoven and his Son

Carla Bruni had her first child, son Aurelien with philosophy professor Raphael Enthoven. She was also the mistress of Enthoven’s father, Jean-PaulEnthoven who is a journalist.

She began her relationship with Raphael Enthoven who was still married to novelist Justine Levy.  Bruni claims that she only went out with Jean-Paul Enthoven a few times when he was already in the process of divorcing his wife.

Media reports have cast Bruni as a ‘man-eater,’ following her string of relationships with famous men. They include former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius and United States of America property tycoon Donald Trump.

She also dated Eric Clapton and Mike Jagger when she was a model and has a daughter with Mick Jagger, named Georgia May.

In 2008, Bruni married French President Nicholas Sarkozy. She obtained French citizenship and became French First Lady.

4. Maurizio Remmert is her Biological Father

Bruni revealed to ‘Vanity Fair’ in 2008 that her biological father is Maurizio Remmert, an Italian-born Brazilian. He is a classical guitarist and a supermarket billionaire who comes from a wealthy family.

Remmert and Bruni’s mother met at a concert in Turin when he was a 19-year-old classical guitarist. Their affair lasted six years.

Her paternal grandparents and her maternal grandfather were Italian, while part of her ancestry is French.

Bruni worked as a model from 1987 to 1997, before becoming a musician. She started her career as a model at the age of 19 years.

Paul Marciano, president and creative director of “Guess? Inc” came across her photo among composite cards of aspiring models. He chose her to model in the campaigns to promote “Guess?” jeans.

She also worked for designers and fashion houses such as Christian Dior, Givenchy, Paco Rabanne, Sonia Rykiel, and Versace among others.

In the 1990s, Bruni was among the 20 highest-paid fashion models globally, earning US$7.5 million in her peak year.

6. Her Nude Photograph Auctioned for US$91,000

In April 2008, a 1993 nude photograph of Bruni taken during her modeling career was auctioned for 91,000 US dollars which was more than 60 times the expected price.

While on a state visit to the UK with her husband, controversy arose with the publication by Christie’s auction house of her nude photograph.

In December 2008, she sued a fashion line company for selling bags featuring her nude photograph.  The company produced 10,000 shopping bags emblazoned with nude photos taken in 1993.

The photo showed her staring at the camera with her crossed hands covering her crotch.

7. Carla Bruni Starred in Woody Allen’s  Film 

In a television interview broadcast on 23 November 2009, Bruni revealed that she had accepted a role in a forthcoming ‘Woody Allen film.

She admitted her reasoning for embarking on the Paris production, was that she couldn’t miss an opportunity to make a film with woody Allen.

The film, ‘Midnight in Paris’ was released in 2011, where Bruni appeared as a guide at the Muse Rodin.

Bruni began her music career in the ‘90s. Her first album was a success in France. And it was later released in the United States.

She has released four albums since 2008, and some songs from the albums have been featured in television shows and movies. In January 2010, her song‘Lamoureuse’ was featured in an episode of NBC’s Chuck, ‘Chuck vs. First Class.’

Bruni sang for Nelson Mandela on his 91st birthday on 18 July 2009 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

9. Carla Bruni Would have Voted against her Husband  in the 2007  French Presidential Election

During the 2007 French presidential election, Bruni stated that she would have voted for Segolene Royal, who was running against her future husband, Nicolas Sarkozy in the 2007 presidential elections.

Bruni said her lack of French citizenship disallowed her from voting, but she would have voted left wing due to it being a family tradition.

In an October 2011 interview with the British newspaper ‘The Sunday Herald’, Bruni said that her family always voted to the left and that she will never vote right wing.

In another interview, Bruni when asked about her political leanings said that she was left-wing but was not against her husband.

10. Carla Bruni Supports Humanitarian and Charity Work

Carla Bruni has been Involved in humanitarian and charity work for years. She became a world ambassador for the protection of mothers and children against HIV in 2008.

She supports different events and causes such as the Born HIV Free campaign, animal rights, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, and the French association for AIDS research.

Carla Bruni also supports and promotes emerging artists, as she performed a duet with French vocalist, Marc Lavoine, for the Prix Constantin.
