Fashion Trends in Portugal

Paris, New York, Tokyo are some of the most trendsetting cities in the world, but today I want to highlight Portugal potential in fashion and introduce you to some of the most popular fashion trends at the moment. Some of these are timeless, others are a bit more temporary.

Portuguese fashion designers are slowly finding their bearings and starting to enter the cruel world fashion scene! In this article, I will share with you a few of the Portuguese fashion trends to inspire you while packing for your stay in Lisbon.

To some, fashion might seem a little superficial but, to others, it means a lot! Fashion and style can be considered as empowering, as well as acts of self-expression and of creativity. People are quick to judge, and the first impression one makes is obviously through their appearance. No one can deny this. In some cultures, the outfit can even reveal one’s marital status! To some people, it can also tell others what kind of music they’re into. This is why we can understand the reasons why fashion means so much to most people.

If you want to know about some of the most popular fashion trends in Portugal, read on to find out!

The see-through

The see-through trend is nothing new but it still is so trendy in the fashion world! Transparent fabric that show a bit of your lingerie are a must in your wardrobe! Even some men adopted this trend to reveal a bit of their chests!

When properly worn, it is very sexy and sensual but not vulgar.

The oversize

Comfort is key! The oversize trend is here to stay! With a smart outfit composition, an oversized coat, sweater, pullover looks good on everyone! Plus, it is extre comfy!

Thanks to the oversize trend, one can look relaxed and comfortabel while still being classy! All you need to do is not to overdo the oversize look. Know how to balance the different pieces of your outfit. Less is more, so learn how to keep it simple!

Pleated skirts

Pleated skirts are another trend you will see in the streets of Lisbon, especially the midi length ones! Portuguese women love to wear kind of vintage-y pleated skirts with a simple tee shirt or a sweater tucked in. It looks laid-back but very stylish!

It’s definitely a trend I encourage you to adopt while visiting Portugal. You will mangle with the crowd. Pleated skirts are a must, because they are practical and comfortable. It is the perfect fashion item to walk the streets of Lisbon!

Minimalist bikinis

Fashion should be sustainable. Clothing brands need to care more about the environmental pollution and find adequate solutions. Conscious swimwear is an example to follow! They care about our planet and look for materials that will help reduce waste and minimise the environmental impact of the fashion industry!

All the conscious swimwear items are made out of recycled fabrics, knwown as Econyl. This fabric is manufactured with plastic residues from the ocean.

This Portuguese brand is so inspiring! Each top and bottom costs between forty to sixty euros. It is a little more expensive than what we find in stores of fast fashion companies, but in my opinion, it definitely is worth our money. We need to buy from smaller companies like conscious swimwear to encourage them, but also to show the biggest brands the direction they all have to take in a world that needs to be more aware of the environmental issues and more respectful towards nature.

This year, minimalist bikinis, such as conscious swimwear ones, were very popular on Portuguese beaches. I feel like this is definitely a trend that will stick around for a while. So, hurry up to get your eco-friendly bikinis for next summer!

Jumpsuits and overalls

Jumpsuits and overalls are so trendy, both during the summer and the winter! You will see a great variety of them during your stay in Portugal. Denim ones or velvet ones are the Portuguese favorite! They look good in every occasion!

You can simply pair them with a long-sleeved top or even a pullover, for the colder days. During the summer, simply wear them with a simple tee shirt or even an off-shoulder top. Either way, this fashion trend is timeless and will never go out of fashion. Jumpsuits are very classy, while overalls are super cute! Style them according to your mood.

Off-shoulders tops

Off-shoulder tops are the next fashion trend in Portugal I’m about to talk about. Women love to own of these, because it reveals one of the most sensual parts of their bodies. At least, that is what I think.

Women’s collarbone is such a delicate and attractive part of the body. You can wear an off-shoulder top with a pair of jeans or a denim skirt. Then, all you need to do is to accessorize, with minimalist jewels for instance, and you got a killer outfit! Like I always say, less is more!

The fanny pack

In the 1990’s, fanny packs were super trendy. Well, they are definitely back in force this year. During the Lisbon Fashion Week, known as Moda Lisboa (MLX), all the trendiest people wore one across the body.

Some like to wear across the chest, others also enjoy wearing it as a belt. Ladies, for instance, can wear an oversized trench coat or a dress, and mark the waist with the fanny pack.

Try to find a vintage one that are usually much classier than the ones we find in fast fashion stores.

One thing I know for sure is that some of the most roasted fashion trends over the past years, such as the mom jeans, the dad shoes, the chunky sneakers have made a grand comeback this year!

Vintage shirts

To end this article, I want to talk about the vintage shirts that are seen on all the streets of the biggest cities of Portugal, like Porto and Lisbon! Both women and men wear them, but especially the men.

You will see some of them wearing the shirts outside the trousers, others tucked in the jeans. You will easily one of these popular vintage shirts at the many vintage stores around Lisbon, but you can order them online as well.

As you can see thanks to my article about fashion trends in Portugal, fashion is very laid-lack! The Portuguese love to feel comfy and relaxed in their clothes. Now that I’ve given you a tiny taste of Portuguese fashion trends, you know what to expect on Lisbon’s streets. Don’t forget that comfort is key. Prioritize your cosiness.
