The Ilulissat Art Museum is currently found in the residence of a former colony manager. The house was formerly occupied by the municipal council and five colony managers together with five commercial principals. This was until the house was opened as a museum in the year 1995.

The museum’s permanent exhibition is currently on the ground floor. The collections found on this floor are mainly paintings of Emanuel A. Petersen.

 On the first floor of the house, there are changing exhibitions, where during different seasons, visual artists perform the exhibitions at the Art Museum. During the summertime, the museum welcomes visitors from all walks of life to visit the surrounding arctic kitchen garden.

1. It was designed by Helge Bojsen-Møller

In 1917,  the house of the colony manager was built and designed by Helge Bojsen-Møller. Since 1939, the house which was dedicated to the Rasmussen has served as a museum.

In the year 2011, the house caught fire but the house and furniture were saved.

When the Ilulissat Museum was opened to the public, it was dedicated to one of the famous Danish explorers Knud Rasmussen. This was because of the work he did for the establishment of the art museum.
