Søren KierkegaardSøren Kierkegaard

Sren Aabye Kierkegaard, widely regarded as the first existentialist philosopher, was a Danish theologian, philosopher, poet, social critic, and religious author. He wrote critical texts on organized religion, Christendom, morality, ethics, psychology, and religious philosophy, with a penchant for metaphor, irony, and parables.

Much of his philosophical work is concerned with the issues of living as a “single individual,” emphasizing the importance of concrete human reality over abstract thinking and emphasizing the importance of personal choice and commitment.

He was opposed to literary critics who defined idealist intellectuals and philosophers of his time, and he believed that “scholars” “understood” Swedenborg, Hegel, Fichte, Schelling, Schlegel, and Hans Christian Andersen far too quickly.
