Sarah Polley, the director of Women Talking, was robbed of a much-deserved Oscar nomination for Best Director.
What was the Academy thinking? Oh, right, a very uncomfortable subject being addressed and done so brilliantly. She skillfully demonstrated an incredible ability to deftly navigate the complexity of the subject matter and masterfully management of the all-star ensemble.
IMHO, one of the absolute standouts in this phenomenal ensemble was Judith Ivey creating and delivering a moving and measured performance. Not to be overlooked is Ben Whishaw as August, so reminiscent of a young Anthony Perkins, both in his physical resemblance and his nuanced character creation.
This is one of those films that luminously shines a light on and addresses a dirty little secret’ without pandering to the viewer’s intellect or becoming a screaming soapbox.
Put your potential discomfort aside and see this 5-star film.
