Is Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” a courtroom thriller, a dramatic psychological study, or both, or simply a “true-crime whodunit” with all the twists and turns inherent in that genre? With the backdrop of Sandra Hüller’s all-consuming and brilliant portrayal of the main character Sandra, it is close to impossible to decide.
She brings to mind the incredible Glenda Jackson when she was in her acting prime. Could Hüller steal the coveted Oscar from leading contender Emma Stone? A solid possibility if the Academy doesn’t give it to long-awaiting Annette Benning for her body of work.
I believe no one in the vast majority of the viewing audience outside of France has ever seen or heard of Swann Arlaud. He is at once mysterious, bold, and mischievously devious in his development of the subtle and at the same time no-holds-barred lawyer Vincent.
Rounding out this extraordinary cast is French child/youth actor Milo Machado Graner as the blind son witness to “the events.”
