1. National Tsinghua University

The University’s motto of “Self-Discipline and Social Commitment” and the spirit of “Actions Speak Louder than Words”, has resulted in the university being ranked one of the top 10 universities in Beijing. Since 2015 it has ranked as one of the best universities in the engineering and computer science disciples beating the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT according to the U.S. News & World Report. In 2019, it also ranked number one globally in Computer Science and Civic Engineering.

To add to its glory, the university also boasts of having one of the most beautiful campuses in China. It has a natural picturesque environment that creates the best atmosphere and environment for learning.  The university’s landscape is adorned with an ancient Chinese-style garden landscape. The university was built on the former site of the Qing Dynasty royal gardens in northwest Beijing.

The university was founded in 1911 and known as ‘Tsinghua Xuetang’. In 1912, the school was renamed to “Tsinghua School”. The university got its current name in 1928. The primary language in the institution is Chinese however, due to the increase of international students some graduate degrees are offered in English.

2. Peking University

Just as National Tsinghua University, Peking University is one of the most prestigious and renowned universities in China and the world. The university has become a center for teaching and research. It boasts of having 216 research centres, including two national engineering research centres, and 12 national key laboratories. It was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China and has continually played an essential role of pioneers in the course of China’s modernization.

The campus is also referred to as “Yan Yuan” meaning “the garden of Yan”. It is located at Haidian District in the western suburb of Beijing. It is full of beautiful traditional houses, gardens and other historical structures. The campus environment is truly beautiful

Originally founded as the Imperial University of Peking in 1898. It served as the highest administration for education. In 1912, the university adopted its current name. Today the university embraces diverse branches of learning such as basic and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and sciences of medicine, management, and education.

3. Beijing Normal University

Today the university lays great emphasis on exchange and cooperation with educational institutions regionally and internationally, making every endeavor to pursue the global prestige. In 2017 BNU was listed in the “world-class universities “of Class A (36 universities), and 11 disciplines (8th in China) have been selected for China’s “Double-First Class” Initiative.

The university is famous for its Mandarin Chinese study programs. BNU, in short, has become a comprehensive and research-intensive university with its main characteristics of basic disciplines in sciences and humanities, teacher education and educational science. It is one of the first Chinese institutions to accept international students.

Initially, Beijing Normal University was established as the Faculty of Education of the Imperial University of Peking and known as Supreme Education School of Peking. In 1923, the name changed to National Beijing Normal University, the first Normal University in China’s history.

4. Renmin University of China (RUC)

RUC, in short, is a research-oriented comprehensive university focusing on humanities, social sciences and management science. It was the first modern university founded by The People’s Republic of China. It is also known as the People’s University of China.

Today the university comprises 23 schools, 13 research institutes and the graduate school, with 60 specialities for undergraduate, 8 specialities for the second bachelor’s degree students, 140 specialities for the master’s degree candidates and 92 specialities for the Doctor’s degree candidates.

Its origins can be traced back to Shanbei Public School founded in 1937 amidst the Anti-Japanese War. Over the years it changed its name to North China United University then to North China University. Under the advisement of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on 3rd October 1950, it acquired its current name.

5. Beihang University

BUAA, in short, is a comprehensive, research-oriented public university which focuses on aeronautics, astronautics and informatics. Apart from that the university also covers natural sciences, high technology, medicine, liberal arts, law, economy, management, philosophy, foreign languages and education.

Today the University has 27 schools covering 10 major disciplines. It offers 59 undergraduate programs, 38 masters’ degree authorization first-level disciplines programs, 21 doctor degree authorization first-level disciplines, and 17 postdoc stations.

Founded on 25th October 1952, as Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, from the merger of the aeronautical departments of Tsinghua University, Beiyang University, Xiamen University, Sichuan University, etc. It was the first aeronautical and astronautical engineering institutions in China. It is located in the center of the Zhongguancun Science Park.
