Where to Eat Traditional Shakshouka in Barcelona

Despite originating in the Middle East, shakshouka quickly migrated its way into the cafes and hearts of the Catalonian capital.

Shakshouka is a poached egg and salsa based dish that is traditionally served in the pan that it is cooked in. One eats it using bread instead of cutlery, and it’s phenomenal.

There aren’t a lot of places where one can find good shakshouka Barcelona, but I’ve narrowed it down to a top five. Read on!

Ugot Bruncherie in Barcelona

The Middle East might eat shakshouka at all hours of the day, but in Barcelona it is preferred at brunch time.

This bruncherie sits in the city center, just outside of the Jardins d’Emma de Barcelona.

The menu is solely brunch foods, but they can be ordered through until closing time at 9pm nightly; so if you fancy a shakshouka dinner, this is your spot.

The dish itself is simple. I believe the magic is in the spices, and just the sauce with some fresh French loaf is satisfying enough. I found the sauce to egg ratio to be slightly off, so consider adding an extra egg if you think you can stomach it!

Eggs Benedict lovers should keep this spot on their radar, too!

Eixampeling Brunch Café & Bar in Barcelona

I’ll come right out and say it: the shakshouka at Eixampeling Brunch Café was the best I’ve had in Barcelona; and possibly better than the best one I had in Paris, but that’s a story for another time.

My theory is backed by a conversation I overheard the last time I visited this cafe. A woman was telling the server how she is an international flight attendant who has had the opportunity to taste shakshouka all over the world — and this one was her favorite. “Tell the chef!”, she said.

This cafe is actually just around the corner from our first spot, Ugot, and you’ll use the same metro station to get to both.

Perhaps we can’t call the shakshouka at Eixampeling Brunch Café “traditional”, as they do get experimental with the dish, especially when it comes to toppings. You’ll see, you’ll see.

Enkel in Barcelona

Unbeknownst to most, shakshouka comes in red as well as green. Green shakshouka is uncommon in Barcelona, and Enkel is one one the only spots I’ve been able to find it in all my searching.

I actually prefer their green shakshouka to their red; anyone who loves avocado will likely feel the same.

Served with ciabatta bread, both the red and the green shakshouka are perfectly seasoned, perfectly portioned and perfectly enjoyable any time of the day. It’s close to the beach, perhaps a stroll?

Firebug in Barcelona

Once you taste the shakshouka at Firebug, you’ll likely challenge my statement that Eixampeling Cafe makes the best in the city.

It’s a giant serving of the dish, generously topped with chives, coriander and fresh bakes bread.

Firebug is known for their perfect execution of egg based meals; they have an array of menu items that make use of this key ingredient.

Essentially, Firebug is a brasserie. These are popular establishments in France, but aren’t found often elsewhere. Brasseries are known for having menus that can be enjoyed from morning until night, which works well for shakshouka since it’s traditionally enjoyed at all times of the day in the Middle East.

I’m on a mission to convince Firebug to attempt a green shakshouka in the near future. If you dine here, let them know you think it would be a good idea, too.

Hummus in Barcelona

Let’s put shakshouka aside for a minute and consider Hummus as a dining spot on a whole.

This is a vegetarian restaurant where everything on the menu is somewhat centered around the beloved chickpea. Personally, this is my rendition of heaven.

Falafel balls, hummus plates, chickpea burgers… a vegetarian/vegan dream.

Coincidentally, they have added a traditional Middle Eastern shakshouka to their menu. Admittedly it’s the least aesthetically pleasing shakshouka in our roundup, it looks more like a tomato soup from afar, until you realize there are eggs buried under that sauce.

Flavor wise, it’s on point. And I found the portion to be particularly manageable compared to others.

If you like your shakshouka eggs soft, be sure to mention it!

While there might not be many great shakshouka options in Barcelona, there are always great free guided walking tours. Take a look at the one’s happening in your neighborhood and consider joining a slot.
