Top 5 Brunch Spots in Barcelona

Are you a fan of a mid-morning meal? A stack of pancakes? A traditional Eggs Benedict? Perhaps even a shakshouka?

Barcelona does brunch — and I’m going to tell you exactly where you need to be when it comes time to eat before midday.

As with every brunch in Europe: get there early! If you don’t already know how the queues can be, you shouldn’t want to find out. Let’s eat!

1. Eixampeling Brunch Café & Bar in Barcelona

Ironically, I found this brunch spot while hunting down the very shakshouka mentioned above. This was not an easy dish to find in Barcelona, let me tell you.

At Eixampeling, it’s all in the name. A brunch cafe and bar that brings a lot of happiness into the world through their carefully crafted meals.

The menu is vegetarian, for the most part. A few of the dishes have smoked salmon on them, and the Eggs Benny does come with the option of ham. Mostly, this cafe is simply a great place to have every different variant of eggs imaginable.

Apart from their great food, Eixampeling is known as one of Barcelona’s most LGBTQ+ friendly brunch spots. All are welcome here and kindness is standard practice.

2. Firebug in Barcelona

Firebug identifies as a “brunch, bar and bistro” and is situated right opposite the Arc de Triomf in the city center. I would essentially call this spot a brasserie, similar to the traditional ones found in France.

At Firebug, the day starts at 10am and doesn’t close up until the early hours of the next morning.

A great spot for the brunch classics, as well as bistro-style brunch meals that a lot of spots don’t usually have on offer. Their pastrami bagel, for example, is a much loved option for meat eaters.

While I recommend Firebug for lunch, I also recommend it for any other mealtime during the day. It’s a perpetually festive spot!

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday — 10am to 1:30am

3. ENKEL in Barcelona

ENKEL is a sweet little spot for brunch and lunch. They get exceptionally artisanal with their dishes, making sure each of them is worth of their own Instagram photoshoot.

Because of my morning sweet tooth, I am addicted to their pancakes and rarely order anything else.

I have sampled the French toast, a dish they do entirely savory with eggs and bacon, and I must say I was very impressed. Usually I wouldn’t give syrup-less, fruit-less, sugar-less French toast the time of day.

Come for Eggs Benny, come for shakshouka, and later in the day, come for delicious, juicy burgers and beers on tap.

ENKEL means “simple” in Swedish; a simple place with a simply wonderful kitchen and vibe? That must be it.

4. Brunch & Cake up Granados in Barcelona

You have to hand it to the brunch spots in Barcelona; they do a great job of announcing themselves through their names before you’ve even arrived at the premises.

Brunch & Cake being no different, serves up daily, fresh brunch… and cake.

This brunch spot has become so popular in Barcelona that there are now multiple branches across the city. This one in Granados is nearest to where I stay, but every so often I’ll vent to the one right on the water, called Brunch & Cake by the Sea.

Brunch you’ll order from their menu, and the cakes you’ll browse throughout the restaurant space as everything will be on display, hot out the oven. They really do go all out in this regard; donuts, tarts, cakes, muffins, cupcakes… you name it.

Fruitarians will enjoy the presence of a fruit bowl on the brunch menu! It’s served in a hollowed out pineapple and worthy of one of those Instagram shoots mentioned earlier.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday — 9am to 8pm
ADDRESS: Carrer d’Enric Granados, 145, 08008 Barcelona, Spain
Metro STATION: Diagonal

5. Marmalade in Barcelona

Marmalade is a really classy brasserie that opens its doors for brunch just three days a week. From Friday to Sunday you’ll be able to dine here from 10am, while during the rest of the week this spot only opens for dinner service.

Their brunch has become the talk of the town, and you’ll have to make a reservation if you’d like to be part of it during peak season.

Much of the popularity lies in the boozy brunching; brunch with “naughty cocktails” and bottomless mimosas.

That being said, the menu is something to be talked of. There are brunch dishes for all dietary requirements, with a few of the dishes suitable for vegans with some subtle changes.

Marmalade are known for their many pancake stack options, with toppings and flavors you’ve never even thought to put together.

Something to keep an eye out for is their Spanish brunch containing patatas bravas and slices of fresh bread!
