10 Things To Eat in el Raval, Barcelona

El Raval marks the very center of Barcelona’s Old Town, and is a tourist attraction in itself.

Because el Raval is a melting pot of both locals and travelers, there is architectural history, cultural diversity, unmatched nightlife & cuisines from all around the world. I’ve previously looked at ten things to do in el Raval, now let’s focus on ten things to eat in el Raval!

1. Vegetarian: Vegetalia Raval in El Raval, Barcelona

If I’m spending the day in el Raval, this is where you’ll find me.

Vegetalia Raval is a vegetarain restaurant, but most of their menu is vegan friendly. They are one of few spots in Barcelona that offer the Beyond Meat burger, the best vegan burger available on the market right now.

A lot of people come to try this, and even more come for their completely veggie based paella. There is also a gluten free menu available.

2. Grab-&-Go: Teddy’s Saj Sandwiches in El Raval, Barcelona

Prior to visiting Teddy’s I had never even heard of “saj sandwiches”. I had a few minutes before my guided walking tour and needed something to eat… fast!

These sandwiches are made on a sort of traditional eastern flat bread that is piled with toppings as then rolled up for easy consumption. I wouldn’t be able to tell you what I ordered; I was at the mercy of the server. But it was coated in zaatar spice and absolutely phenomenal.

If you’re very hungry you’ll probably need to order two!

3. Gastropub: Chaka Khan in El Raval, Barcelona

Considered one of the coolest places to see and be seen in all of Barcelona, Chaka Khan has ticked all the right boxes.

A menu consisting of everything from pancakes to bao buns, quesadillas to “East African red lentil croquettes” – I mean just try find fault in that.

It’s right opposite the el Raval public square. Surprisingly there seems to always be space for walk ins despite being perpetually overflowing with people.

Want to dine where the locals do in el Raval? Welcome to Can Lluís.

This is traditional, wholesome Catalonian food at its best. For one entire evening you’ll forget all about tapas and revel in the generously portioned plates in front of you.

This restaurant has been here since 1929. The wine is cheap, the food authentic and the vibe unmatched. During lunch service you can enjoy a three course meal for just €10.50.

5. Tapas: My F****** Restaurant in El Raval, Barcelona

The name of this spot tells us that whoever owns it was clearly over the moon to finally have their own space in which to serve tapas to el Raval.

This tapas joint is making waves amongst travelers, who are initially drawn by the name. To sweeten the deal, this entire restaurant is gluten free.

Because of its overwhelming popularity you’ll need to make a reservation if you want to dine here.

Habibi’s is a traditional Lebanese eatery that offers a shisha smoking lounge up the stairs. Keeping the shisha away from the dining room makes it suitable for families with children, and the exciting interior is definitely somewhere you want to bring your kids!

The food is great, everything is halal and prices are very reasonable.

7. Greek: El Magraner Boig in El Raval, Barcelona

If you ever want to eat Greek food in a country outside of Greece, you have to be shown the way by an actual Greek person. That’s exactly how I found this spot; followed some Greeks here after their free guided walking tour through Barcelona’s Old Town.

It’s outstanding. El Magraner Boig is run by a Greek family who have kept the atmosphere modern and cool, while to food remains traditional & authentic.

8. Mexican: Chilango’s Taqueria Barcelona in El Raval, Barcelona

Chilango’s sits on the informal boundary that separates el Raval from the neighboring Poble Sec area. It’s so good that the two districts like to argue over whose territory it technically falls under. I’m calling it el Raval!

Great tacos, burritos and speciality plates from Mexico, with a bit of Texan flair in the mix (hey, people love nachos). Their beers are authentic Mexican and imported; try a Modelo!

You’ve never in your life uncovered a more charming and or least assuming space as TAiTU Ethiopian in the south of el Raval.

I’m a fan of traditional wats and injera no matter the season, but this spot has set the bar for Ethiopian cuisine around the world. The environment is unmatched, service impeccable and there are many, many meal options for vegans and gluten free eaters.

Come for acai. Come for pancakes. Come for absolutely anything on this menu.

Flax&Kale is a wonder of a cafe in the heart of el Raval. They are open from early morning until late into the evening, meaning you could eat this superfood dish here for all three meals if you so desired.

It goes without saying but vegans, vegetarians and gluten free eaters are well catered to here as well. Raw vegan lasagne? Life changing.
