10 Different Cuisines to Eat in Barcelona

Barcelona is a city of mix; a mix of people, a mix of interests, a mix of culture and a mix of cuisines. Some come to see what Gaudi left behind, holding art and architecture to the highest importance; others come to laze on Barceloneta beach, sipping sangria between sampling paellas and taking free guided walking tours.

However you like to spend your time, there is always a new cuisine lurking nearby that you’ve likely yet to try. Did you know you can eat Ethiopian food in Barcelona? Neither did I until very recently!

Here are ten outstanding cuisines you can find within the Barcelona city center.

1. Italian: Macchina in Barcelona

Macchina have branches of their Italian eateries scattered all over Barcelona. The country’s close proximity to the homeland has seen strong migration of the cuisine over into the center.

My favorite Macchina is the one in Gracia, as the ambience is a lot more alluring I’ve found. The food remains consistently good and well priced across all of their stores. Authentic Italian comfort food when you need it most.

2. Thai: El Petit Bangkok in Barcelona

Barcelona is not lacking in Thai food options. This spot is also in Gracia, and I love making time to eat here as often as possible.

It’s a quirky, fun space where families are welcome. The menu holds all the Thai classics you’d want to find, including their house Pad Thai that I think about far too often for my own good.

Note that they are not open at all on both Sundays and Mondays.

3. Vegan: Teresa Carles in Barcelona

Staying on trend, Barcelona’s old town is turning into a neighborhood of tapas bars, vegan eaters and guided walking tours.

Teresa Carles is a more upmarket dining experience for vegans who want formal, sit down meal instead of simply hopping between cafes all the time. Here, you’ll be taken on a plant based journey of three or more dining courses as per your preference.

Reservations are encouraged; this restaurant is fast gaining popularity amongst the vegetarian and vegan communities.

4. Oragnic: Petit Brot in Barcelona

Organic eateries are something that Barcelona needs more of. A city with so many health oriented establishments, but few making an effort to become fully organic.

Petit Brot is one we can count on for a very basic menu of lunchtime foods; available only between 1pm and 4:30pm on certain days of the week. The dishes are outstanding; colorful bowls and fresh plated raw sushi, sandwiches and more. They also press fruits and veggies into juices.

5. Dim Sum: Fan Dim Sum in Barcelona

Some of the best dumplings I’ve had in Europe were right here in Barcelona. Fan Dim Sum are a competitive dumpling house serving freshly made cuisine by the order; I emphasize this as many dim sum houses make use of long-time frozen dumplings and the quality is noticeably lacking.

At Fan Dim Sum you can do a two person sharing tray for just €25. They do an interesting green tea ice cream as well; I can’t say I was the biggest fan but I know some people come just for this.

6. Ethiopian: Abissinia Restaurant in Barcelona

Gracia really does come through with diversity in terms of foreign cuisines. Abissinia is my go-to for authentic Ethiopian food in Barcelona.

You’ll dine on traditional wats and injera. They cater shared trays or individual plates if you happen to be dining alone. Ethiopian cuisine caters to vegans unintentionally as they make use of a lot of vegetables in wat preparation.

7. Sushi: Can Kenji in Barcelona

Sometimes in Europe you just need your comfort foods to give you that much needed break from the pastas, and pizzas, & paellas…

Sushi is that comfort food for many. Barcelona has a lot of great sushi spots, I simply enjoy this one as it is closest in walking distance to the Sagrada Familia. Small sushi restaurants are also (generally) preferable as your wait time between ordering and eating is a lot quicker.

8. Indian: Bembi in Barcelona

Depending on where you hail from in the world, Indian food might be your comfort cuisine of choice.

Bembi is by no means the most affordable Indian dining experience you’ll have in the city center, but it is undoubtably the best. Between the curries, service and quality, you’ll find little fault. A fabulous, hearty dinning out experience in Barcelona.

9. Mexican: Costa Pacífico in Barcelona

Some say that Costa Pacifico may be the best Mexican restaurant in all of Catalonia, not only Barcelona. I believe I agree.

This is where you’ll get tacos that taste as though they were made on the streets of Mexico just minutes before. A lot of people come for the ceviche, which is also made to homeland perfection.

10. Greek: Dionisos in Barcelona

Dionisos is the trusted name in Greek food across Barcelona. There are five branches scattered around the city; the one I frequent is in el Raval between the streets filled with nightlife and entertainment.

As in most authentic Greek eateries, the menu in Dionisos is simple. The gyro is fresh, the dakos is properly dressed and the lamb chops are the juiciest in town — sound good?
