The Best Dance Studios in Bangkok

If you are one of those travellers abroad who prefers a more active pursuit towards holiday-making, then you won’t be disappointed once you hit the Thai capital city of Bangkok.

The first thing you’ll probably notice though, is the fact that due to the searing temperatures and concrete-heightened humidity prevalent for the majority of the year, the lifestyle for active people within this city tends to veer more towards the ‘indoor’ rather than the ‘outdoor’ more often than not.

But that’s not to say that you’ll encounter any shortage of indoor, physical activities to participate in in Bangkok. The younger, more modern generations of Thais are constantly on the lookout for the next trend to jump onto.

In fact, there’s always some new, fancy and innovative pursuit appearing in the city-centre regions, whether they be entirely new trends or repackaged versions of existing, tried and tested ones.

So whether you fancy indulging in a spot of Thai boxing, Yoga, Pilates, badminton, swimming, trampolining, climbing, or ice-skating –- to name but a few –- there’s always plenty of opportunity to escape the otherwise endless (and sometimes aimless) slog of the packed shopping malls that the locals seem to love frequenting so much.

Perhaps you might be interested in learning or practicing a few dance moves on your visit to Bangkok? Dance is something that has found new popularity in recent years due to YouTube, K-Pop, and also as another, fun and innovative way for active-minded Bangkok locals to keep fit.

If that sounds interesting, or if you are looking for some way of entertaining any over-active youngsters that you have brought along with you, you’re in luck, as there is a surprisingly large selection of dance studios in the Thai capital alongside the gyms, Yoga centres and all kind of other physical pursuit that you might care to think of.

Although the majority of the more high-profile studios are most likely to be found in the ‘central’ city areas like Sukhumvit Road or Siam, there are also likely to be a few local studios geared more towards children if you find yourself more on the outskirts of the city centre.

Check out the shopping malls and community-style, outdoor malls (even some supermarkets) and you’ll probably find something passing or a dance or yoga studio, or maybe a combination of both.

So why not check out our guide to some of the best Bangkok dance studios that will allow you or your kids to try your hand at, or even sharpen your existing skills, in all kinds of different dance styles including everything from ballet to B-Boy hip-hop with a few other local favourite variations such as K-Pop thrown in.

1. Studio Zoom

Beginning along the Sukhumvit Road stretch of dance studio offerings we come to Studio Zoom, a reasonably renowned name in the city. The dancing community in Bangkok attend classes, workshops, and competitions in Zoom studio, which is best-known for its ‘street’ style of dance routine instruction, namely street jazz and hip-hop genres.

Instruction in plenty of other dance genres is also offered here though, including contemporary jazz and Zumba classes, which are taught at all levels, from novice to advanced.

Drop-in classes are available at somewhere in the region of 650b, or there are other types of pass available if you don’t want to sign up for an annual membership – which is of course highly unlikely for the majority of tourists or short-term visitors – so you could get something like a four-class pass for 2,000b.

Plenty of different genres of dance are taught at Rumpuree, including ballet, contemporary, tango, salsa, belly-dancing, hip-hop, pole-dancing, and jazz. Or there is always K-pop dance covers for the kids if the others all sound a bit formal.

There’s a relatively cheap walk-in price of around 500 b, and there are other packages and promotions such as a five-class package for less than 2000b or a 10-class promotion for 3,500 b, although these offers tend to vary from time to time.

It’s actually not that easy to find urban classes in Bangkok, so if you’re all about street styles, this should be your first stop. The studio runs classes with different levels of difficulty including open choreography, beginner, and foundation.

It seems to be quite a bit cheaper from some of the other more formal studios in the city, averaging in at around 450 b per class or 1,200 for three classes, or if you fancy committing to a few more hours’ learning, you can get an unlimited class pass for (6500 b).
