Ten of the Best Bakeries in Bangkok

So you thought Bangkok was all about spicy, stir-fried chilies and basil and green curry?

Well, certainly some aspects of it are – and probably always will be – but Bangkok is also surprisingly quick at integrating elements of other cultures and trends that prove popular with both visitors and locals alike.

Over recent years, or even decades, that has included varying degrees of ever-expanding diversity across the Thai capital by way of  pubs, all manner of foreign restaurants, coffee shops, ice-cream parlours, gyms and fitness centres (all of which are covered in some of our other posts), and…bakeries.

There have been bakeriepopping up more and more rapidly all over the city for at least a decade, although they did exist to a lesser degree before that. Bangkok is a city that fully embraced a seemingly endless list of options to satisfy any type foreign-inspired cake or dessert penchant, and has never been short of takers as even a quick peruse around any shopping mall will prove.

Bangkok’s endless array of shopping malls and complexes are one type of place that you’ll likely find shops selling everything from oven-baked bread to French-inspired patisseries, but aside from all that, if you actually start looking a bit deeper into it you’ll find there’s a whole range of impressive bakeries dotted around the town to give some of those in the best European cities a run for their money.

So let’s take a deeper delve into some of the best bakeries in Bangkok.

1. Landhaus

Landhaus (translated as Farmhouse from German) is a bakery in the Ari region of Bangkok with links to a bigger, ‘parent’ company over in Austria with the name of Gragger & Cie. Hence, here is an ‘authentic’ Bangkok bakery offering much of the same, Austrian-Bavarian style of items found over in Europe, albeit in a tropical setting.

The bakery understandably goes all out to flaunt the credentials suggested by its name, and so is set in a suitably small and homely cottage-style building (or as close as you are likely to find in Bangkok). It comes complete with natural, wooden furniture, including a huge table resplendent with freshly baked delights, all set off nicely by the delicious aroma of freshly ground and brewed coffee.

Aside from the authentic Austrian slant offered by this bakery in Bangkok, it still does its bit for a sustainable approach in that locally sourced, natural ingredients are used for the most part in the bread—albeit that they are then baked in a slightly more authentic wood-fired oven such as is likely to be found at the aforementioned parent branch.

You certainly won’t be spoilt for choice at this place once you catch sight of the menu options which include all kinds of delights including breakfast sets. You might fancy a touch of locally made Leberwurst, or a lunch option where you choose which bread, meats and salad or vegetables you want in your sandwich dish. There are also a few other light meal options, not to mention the sweet baked dessert items like good old  apple strudel.

If none of that sounds appealing for any particular reason, Landhaus also a few fusion options that are a bit more Thai-inspired, like coconut and pandan Danish pastries, and bread with seasonal Thai grains.

Location: 18 Soi Ari 1 Samsen Nai, Bangkok
Hours: 7 am-7 pm

2. Kler Baker

Now this is exactly the kind of place that you should be able to find in Bangkok when considering the bakery theme. Rather than just carbon copies of European bakery options, what you’ll more likely find here is a fusion of French-style bread with Thai flavours by way of a few rather tasty and innovative fillings.

Located on Maha Chai Road in Bangkok, which has something of a ‘foodie’s paradise’ reputation as it is, being home to a few other well-known eateries such as one of Bangkok’s most famous Phad Thai street food restaurants, which might combine quite nicely with this option if you fancied a few hours’ worth of delicacies, Kler Bakery offers a selection of delights that won’t disappoint.

By this we mean that at Kler you can expect both sweet and savoury delights, but of particular note is the bread with yellow crab curry filling, the chicken sweet basil filling option, and the Thai foi thong and coconut cream sauce filling. Wow. These weigh in at somewhere between 50 and 90 baht per item, and are set off nicely by a few other pastry options.

These come by way of mini pies with fillings such as chicken green curry and spicy stir-fried clam. Mmm. These cost around 80 baht each, and are a particular best-seller, apparently.

Maha Chai Road is not exactly the easiest place to get to in terms of public transportation, so we recommend you book a Grab car there and back for the best experience. If you feel a bit more adventurous you might consider travelling by canal boat, which is much cheaper but is certainly not for everyone. If you head to Pan Fa Bridge on the boat you are literally a 10-minute walk away.

Location: 337 Maha Chai Road Samran Rat, Phra Nakhon Bangkok 10200
Hours: 10.00 am-9.00 pm

3. Brioche from Heaven

A bit closer to the central heart of the city in the Silom district you can find a bakery with some degree of renown in Bangkok, namely due to the fact that its owner is a semi-famous Thai chef who once featured in the hit Iron Chef Thailand series.

There is certainly a wide variety of brioche-style bread on offer here, such as the cinnamon brioche, which is the shop’s signature, and comes mouth-wateringly topped with generous degrees of caramel.

It’s not all brioche though, and you can find a few other tempting bakery options such as the chef’s own yuzu meringue, one of the bakery’s best-selling items along with the cinnamon brioche. Worth checking out if you are in the city central region and fancy a bit of an afternoon carb overload.

4. Brix Dessert Bar

Did we mention that Bangkok was a city of shopping malls? Well we couldn’t really consider writing a post about the best bakeries in Bangkok without delving into at least one of the city’s expansive, cool (and packed) malls, which is probably one of the places, if anywhere, that exhausted shoppers might head for a bit of carb-fuelled respite from the crowds and stores.

Brix Dessert Bar is a favourite among the crowds most likely to frequent the Siam Paragon, and not without good reason. The establishment serves a variety of bakery favourites such as desserts and pastries that will definitely lead to that ‘full’ feeling so typical of such delights. Beignet is one of the bakery’s highlights along with a few other donuts options.

5. Custard Nakamura

If the idea of Japanese-influenced bakery treats sound delightful then head to Custard Nakamura on the Sukhumvit Road, which may be one of the best places to find such fare. With the name being something of a giveaway, here you’ll encounter a mix of both sweet and savoury bakery items with that unique twist of Japanese delicacy.

6. Drop by Dough

Drop by Dough is a modern and trendy-looking Bangkok bakery with a minimalist feel to it. Here you’ll encounter some of the best soft, chewy, cream-filled donuts in the city, made with flour imported from — South Korea – just to add that cutting-edge.

Quite a bit of thought has seemingly gone into the flavours on offer here – check out the raspberry donut with hints of aromatic rose, or in a slightly more Thai vein the young coconuts with crunchy coconut bits. If that’s not your thing then there’s always a good old crème brûlée with vanilla and glazed with burnt sugar.

This nice, popular little bakery in Bangkok also serves a reasonable selection of coffee in another central Sukhumvit Road location.

Location: 3131 Soi Sukhumvit 101/2, Bangkok

7. Yellow Spoon Pastry

Yellow Spoon Pastry is a Bangkok bakery with leanings towards the use of organic ingredients. In fact, there is a rather more all-round healthful take on the bakery experience, with the pastries containing the little or no sugar at all.

There is no shortage of choice in what my might be one of Bangkok’s most healthy bakeries, with options such as the shop’s signature fudgy chocolate cake, which is actually flourless, along with meringues and lemon tarts, to name but a couple.

This Bangkok bakery is actually a pretty trendy and easy-on-the-eye spot in which to enjoy a healthy bakery snack, on the ground floor of the high-end Emquartier Mall in the central Phrom Pong district of Bangkok. The shop also runs baking classes for anyone who fancies trying their hand at mastering the art of dessert-making.

8. Holey Artisan Bakery

Holey Artisan Bakery in Bangkok is a follow-on venture from a previous success in the form of a previously-established bakery in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Here is another Bangkok bakery in the Phrom Phong area which seems to be something of a haven of sorts for bakery lovers in the city. Apparently this place soon became known as a prime bread connoisseur’s hangout not too long after opening. It is not too difficult to see why from the fresh bread and other pastries on offer, which are stocked on shelves surrounding the shop’s central showpiece — an open kitchen in the centre of the establishment.

Holy Artisan offers delightful bakery treats like carrot cake, doughnuts filled with various fruit jams, and some of the best croissants and baguettes you are likely to find in a tropical country. As with all good bakeries though, a few savoury options pepper the menu such as breakfast pizza made with sourdough and topped with mozzarella, ricotta, and pecorino, along with bacon, and eggs, with a hint of Italian basil. Mmmm.

Location: 245/12 Sukhumvit Soi 31, Bangkok

9. Maison Chatenet

If you head down to the old town district of Charoenkrung you can find a French pastry bakery by way of Maison Chatenet, where you’ll find a selection of delectable bakery items made with ingredients imported from France.

Artisan-style baked goods are quite the thing in Bangkok at the moment, and here you won’t be disappointed if that’s your particular leaning. Classic butter French croissant pastry dough is used as a main base from which to craft a variety of options, whether that includes sweet fillings and toppings comprising almond cream, fresh strawberries, chocolate, or savoury cheese.

It doesn’t end there though – you’ll also find a range of other choice items at Maison Chatenet such as quiche, sandwiches, chouquettes and canelé, to name but a few.

Baguettes and croissants galore can be found in any of these venues, along with a few choice savoury options like French onion and prawn bisque soup, which comes in an authentic-looking rustic bowl.

There’s always a foie gras sandwich served with honey and chopped apple in lemon juice; or maybe a hazelnut and banana cream choux pastry, atypical delight exclusive to Kayser’s bakeries in Bangkok.
