If you’re visiting Lisbon in September, here’s a list of the best things to do in Lisbon during the wonderful month of September.

Learn more about the city at Lisbon Story Center

Things to do in Lisbon in September

Another great thing to do in Lisbon in September is to visit the Lisbon Story Center. This is a great starting point for your visit in Lisbon. It is an interactive museum that tells the story of the main events from the city’s history to its current day. Located in the heart of the city, in Terreiro do Paço, you can visit this museum and then head on our Alfama tour to see how the stories played out in the real city.

Eat fresh grilled fish

You can’t come to Lisbon in September and not eat the best fish you’ll ever taste! There are two spots by the shore to get great fish: in Cascais, which used to be a fishermen village and still has restaurants with great fish. If you go a bit further towards Sintra, you can get great seafood as well.

Otherwise, you can also go to Costa da Caparica, located on the other side of the river. Then, in the city center, there is this amazing restaurant called Páteo 13, which has the best grilled fish you can find in the city center. This is a hidden gem and it’s close to where we finish our Alfama tour. Join us to find out where to have the best grilled fish in town!

Enjoy students’ praxis

Praxis graduation

One of the best things you’ll get to see in Lisbon in September is a (quite controversial) tradition that takes place at the beginning of the academic year. The praxes are a set of activities older students engage in with new students. The core goal is to build team spirit, develop relationships and prepare them for the upcoming year. Of course, some of the activities are more controversial than others, but it is interesting to see the city flooded with young students dressed in black, singing and performing in the city’s streets.

Visit the Natural History Museum

A great thing to do in Lisbon in September if you don’t know what to do is to visit the Natural History Museum. It is right upwards from Bairro Alto, on your way towards Príncipe Real square. The Natural History Museum hosts amazing collections and it’s a great idea for when you are in Bairro Alto during the daytime.

Go to St George’s Castle

Visiting St. George’s Castle is a great thing to do in Lisbon in September. It is a very well preserved castle as it was recovered in the late twentieth century, so you can actually see how the walls were built. It is an extremely fun place and it has one of the most breathtaking views of Lisbon.

After visiting the castle and maybe having lunch in the restaurants around, you can join us in our Alfama tour to discover one of the most interesting neighborhoods of the city. Learn more about this tour here.

Go the to the Festa do Avante!

Starting from the 6th of September until the 8th of September, the Festa do Avante takes place in Quinta da Atalaia. It is one of the oldest Portuguese summer festivals! They always invite a great variety of artists and performers. During this festival, politics, cinema, theather, great food coexist at the sound of great live music!

The artists performing at this year’s Festa do Avante are mostly Portuguese. We can count with the presence of Expensive Soul, Clã, Moonspell, Ana Bacalhau, Throes and the Shine and many others! If you’re looking for a different kind of activity where you will get to meet and spend time with the locals while learning about their culture and opinions, you absolutely need to go to the Festa do Avante!
